Polymeric hollow fibers: a modular heat exchanger for thermal management systems of battery modules in electric vehicles

The liquid-cooling system based on polymeric hollow fibers (ø1 mm) embedded inside durable polydicyclopentadiene is proposed for thermal management of li-ion cylindrical batteries from their surface. In the present work, a dramatically improved design presented, eliminating following drawbacks: I) resistance heat exchanger minimized by bringing into direct contact with negative terminal/cylindrical shell, II) fabrication process (combination extrusion and rapid injection molding) significantly simplified accelerated as essential component nearly planar, III) inlet/outlet manifolds were refined to enhance modularization cooling whole battery pack. pressure loss favorably low, about 100 Pa, corresponding 10 l/min coolant circulating in entire pack virtual electrical vehicle. was stacked 18650-type lithium-ion cells, which repeatedly charged/discharged. With inlet temperature 20 °C C-rate 1 C, maximum cells during cycling between 26 22 given range flow rates (5–45 ml/min). Temperature spreads 4 °C.
